Recent studies confirm previous findings that estrogen-alone therapy may actually reduce the incidence of breast cancer in certain women. Theses finding seems confusing because estrogen is recognized to stimulate breast cancer growth in some patients.

Follow-up analysis of data collected for the Women’s Health Initiative study of postmenpausal women has shown an increase risk of breast cancer in women taking combined estrogen and progesterone. The findings suggest there is an increased risk of invasive breast cancer, breast cancer presenting with positive lymph nodes, and breast cancer related deaths.

Women who discontinue postmenopausal hormone therapy (HT) have a significantly increased risk for hip fracture, and the protective effect of HT disappears 2 years after cessation, according to new research presented here at the North American Menopause Society 21st Annual Meeting.
