Mammograms in women 40 to 49 years old. Who has your interest at heart?

Many women, and doctors, are confused by the recent recommendations set forth by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, USPSTF. Breast imaging centers throughout the nation have seen a drop in the number of women in their 40’s returning for their annual screening mammograms.

Infertility and Des Exposure, Guest Writer

Women who were pregnant between 1938 and 1971 were commonly given diethylstilbestrol (DES) by their doctors. DES is a synthetic estrogen. Doctors used to believe that DES helped to reduce the number of miscarriages and premature births that women were experiencing. If your mother was given DES, then you may experience some infertility problems or other health complications as a result.

Are doctors over-treating breast cancer?

At a breast cancer conference March 2010 in Barcelona, experts discussed how to implement mammogram screening programs across Europe, balancing fighting cancer with the goal of targeting only those women who need to be screened.

The conferences findings on mammograms ignited a fierce debate in the United States when an influential panel recommended scaling back screening programs to begin at age 50 instead of 40 — guidelines very close to those already in Europe.

New Ovarian Cancer Screening Approach shows promise….

A new ovarian cancer screening approach appears to be effective for women at average risk of developing the disease. The Risk of Ovarian Cancer Algorithm (ROCA), which is based on patient age and trends in CA-125 blood testing, demonstrated very few false positives and had a specificity of 99.9%.
